It’s the first day of your internship, and you have high hopes. Often, however, those high hopes run smack into a colder, harsher reality.
Expectation: You feel confident in your abilities.
Reality: You quickly find out there is still so much you don’t know.
Expectation: You are going to learn so many cool little tricks.
Reality: You end up using all your knowledge from lecture.
Expectation: You’re going to love having a regular schedule.
Reality: You quickly realize that getting up at 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, is not ideal.
Expectation: You can’t wait to meet your co-workers and fellow interns.
Reality: The woman in the next cubicle tells you every detail of her life.
Expectation: You have an internship, so you’re going to make so much money.
Reality: Turns out, it’s unpaid.
Expectation: You’re going to work so closely with your manager.
Reality: They attend meetings all day. Every day.
Expectation: You began the internship thinking, This is totally what I want to do with my life.
Reality: You come out of the internship realizing this is not what you want to do at all.
